Blog: Fireworks Safety Tips

Each year, the Fourth of July is a time to celebrate and spend time relaxing with friends and family.  Right around dusk, many of us like to enjoy watching fireworks light up the sky. Some of us even like to set off our own fireworks. While certain fireworks are legal, they still are not safe. Setting off fireworks on your own (sparklers included) can come with a great risk. In fact, in 2017, over 12,000 firework-related injuries occurred, and an estimated 1,200 of these were from firecrackers or sparklers.

Don’t let this happen to you! Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Never consume alcohol or drugs when using fireworks
  • Do not allow young children to handle fireworks
  • For older children, always have an adult supervise any firework activities
  • Do not light fireworks in the direction of another person, house, or flammable item
  • Do not place your body directly over fireworks
  • Do not try to relight a malfunctioning firework

This year, sit back and let the experts take charge of the fireworks shows! Instead of sparklers, try a safer alternative such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers.

In the event of a serious injury, visit your local emergency department immediately.
