Sclerotherapy is a procedure performed by a vascular surgeon to treat spider veins and varicose veins.
A vascular surgeon performing sclerotherapy utilizes a small needle to inject a salt solution into the visibly affected veins. After the solution is injected, the treated veins turn into scar tissue, which make the affected veins less visible.
During the procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort or cramping for about one to two minutes. The procedure takes approximately 15-30 minutes.
After sclerotherapy, patients should AVOID:
- Aerobic activity for several days
- Anti-inflammatory drugs for approximately 48 hours
- Hot baths
- Hot compresses
- Whirlpools and/or saunas
- Direct exposure to sunlight
